What can I say, one of my closest and dearest friends who performed some of the most bravest actions I have ever known about in wartime, will finally get his recognition that is long-overdue. Dave was awarded the Silver Star for his actions and even thought that is an awesome award (3rdhighest), his actions constituted so much more. It took 15 years and a forced review of all medals of valor for Dave to finally being recognized for his actions and he will be the only living recipient of this medal for the War in Iraq. Let that sink in for a moment….a war that saw hundreds of thousands of warfighters deployed from 2003 until technically 2011 (even though we still have soldiers there), and he will be the only living person from all of those years to have this medal hung around his neck.
I have the honor of calling Dave one of my closest friends and can say he is one of the funniest guys I know. It doesn’t matter if we were on a commercial break while I was co-hosting with him on WBEN or he was on my show as a guest or we were just talking on the phone, I have given him credit on more than one occasion or making my face hurt from laughing so much.
If you want to learn more about what Dave did on those days and just more about him in general, see if you can find his book “House to House” which I think is sold out on Amazon right now, but you may be able to find it in other places. I am pretty sure the publishing will start cranking out a new run of books, so you may have to wait a little bit. In the meantime, you can catch the documentary from embedded journalist Michael Ware on Netflix called “Only the Dead”. It was originally released by HBO as “Only the dead see the end of war” so you may find it there and with this announcement, I would not be surprised if HBO but it back in rotation. Michael Ware captured the images and sounds from the November 2004 battle in Fallujah with a lot of it dedicated to Dave’s unit, to include capturing audio of the battle Dave was embraced in with 5 insurgents by himself in the house. These are the actions Dave is being recognized for. The book that Dave wrote and released in 2007 is as raw and in your face as you could imagine a grunt could write just after taking part in such actions.
