I just read this story a few moments ago and had to chuckle a little bit.
There are so many in the world that want to make our country look bad or that are citizens of our country who want to apologize for us because they think we are bad, that the motivation to do “right” will actually make things worse.
Afghan Defence Ministry will soon take over charge of the detention center run by the United States military at the Bagram Airbase north of Afghan capital Kabul.
Now let me get this straight, a country with the moral convictions of ours, the ethics we posses and the scrutiny of the entire world is going to hand over the management, care and control of prisoners to one like Afghanistan? Is that what I am to understand? And this is supposed to be for the better? This is like being tossed from the frying pan into the fire, as my Grandma used to say.
The Afghans are known to beat, maim, and even kill their prisoners without remorse, oversight or a care in the world. I have said it on this blog before that I have seen firsthand, the Afghan police and army treat their own citizens so bad that it makes the Abu Ghraib and what happened there by our Reserve Army forces look like sunday school at the local church. The things I have seen them do to guilty and even innocent Afghan people (their own muslim brothers) upset the most hardened and combat-expereinced combat soldiers. How is turning over the prisoners to a force not measured against the Geneva Convention, international law or under the scrutiny that our forces are under going to be for the best? Well maybe it will help us get better intel. Maybe that is the point. We will never be able to beat and interrogate them as well as the Afghans can.
I am sure the prisoners will not be happy to hear about this. I bet they will be crying to have the “mean old” Americans back within the first couple of weeks.
