2008 Army Birthday Ball recap (a few months late)

I realized recently that I had never written a blog entry about the 2008 Army Birthday Ball back in June. Christine and I went again this year because we had such a great time last year. Who knows how much longer we will be able to go, so we might as well go while we can. I was glad to link up with my friend Eve, who was in Afghanistan the same time I was. The venue was different from last year and even though we did not have our best friends there this year like we did last year, we still had a good time. I have to say that the highlight for me was seeing Vice President Cheney in person. I knew something was up when they had us going through metal detectors while entering the ballroom, but at the time President Bush was out of the country so I knew it was not him. Anyway, VP Cheney was the guest speaker and surprised everyone there I believe. I wish I would have had a chance to meet him personally but that was not possible as he had to leave shortly after he finished the speech.

Another person that was a surprise to see while we were there but did not realize it at the time, was LTG Hathaway. LTG Hathaway was the host of the event and even though she flubbed a few lines, including almost forgetting the name of the Sergeant Major of the Army, just a week or so after the Ball she was recommended to be a 4 star General, which would make her the first female to ever achieve that rank.

Like I said at the beginning, I was able to introduce my wife to Eve and they hit it off great. We talked with her for a long time, and in fact met up with her for lunch two days later and ended up visiting for about four hours over lunch before Eve drove us up to Union Station.
Overall it was a really good time. I think I liked the venue last year better and of course last year we got to meet and talk with Dave Worley which was nice. They had several acts this year, but nobody as popular as Mr. Worley.
